Indian court is currently hearing various PILs (PILs) to safeguard the rights of various rights and. They cover remedies for child abuse, woman’s protection rights cultural heritage preservation conservation, ecological balance maintenance and many more.

Recently recently, it was reported that the Supreme Court has been hearing several Public Interest Litigations (PILs). One of the cases was brought by a student from West Godavari district who challenged the movie ‘RRR’ because of its distortion of freedom fighters Alluri Seetharama Komaram Bheem and Raju’s lives as British Police officers. To block its release they’ve requested the court to refuse censor certificate issued by the Censor Board and hold off the screening of the film until the next time.

A bench of two justices consisting of Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma along with Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavali dismissed the PIL. They said that nothing can affect the reputations of renowned people like Alluri Sitarama Raju and Konar Ramaraju “Poison may kill Socrates but not his ideas or literature,” they said.

In addition, the judges advised the makers to take appropriate steps in order to avoid any controversies during its release. They also requested that the censor board ensure that no copyright infringements occur.

In February of 2021 Lyca Productions acquired Tamil Nadu rights to theatrical distribution for RRR while Pen Studios took over North Indian rights. The film is scheduled to release on July 30th, 2020.

Before the film’s release, SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘RRR’ featuring Jr NTR and Ram Charan was upheld in court for the story’s premise based on freedom fighters Alluri Sita Komaram Bheem and Ramaraju. Both were alleged to be deceitful. Alluri Soumya from West Godavari district filed the petition to request that the film’s release be postponed and not issued a censorship certificate.

Alluri Soumya believes that the litigation is of public interest and the court should stop the release of “RRR” because it ruins the history of Alluri Sita Ramaraju as well as Kambaram Bheem. She stated that the story about Alluri Sita Ramaraju was embellished making it untrue; additionally the background of Komaram Bheem was also misrepresented in the film, therefore, she believes the movie should not be released.

Decision

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that was brought in Telangana High Court by Alluri Sowmya who is a student from the West Godavari district. She argued that the representation of the life of two rebels from RRR is in contradiction to their lives and misrepresents the reality. In her plea she asked an order from the court for censor’s certificate and prohibit the producers from releasing the film.

The petitioner had also expressed displeasure with the depiction of Martyr Alluri Seetharamaraju as police officer, a portrayal that she believed is in contradiction with his character and lifestyle. Furthermore, she believes that the film was damaging Alluri Sita Ramaraju’s image and legacy by portraying her as an ordinary police officer.

SS Rajamouli’s directorial directed by his son, is scheduled for release this year and features Jr NTR, Ram Charan and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. It has however, faced many controversies and was delayed indefinitely due to an increase in cases of the COVID-19 Omicron pandemic.

In the past, Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar delivered another attack on the film by instructing them not to use any visuals featuring Jr NTR wearing the Muslim skull cap in its trailer.

The BJP believes this will cause a deep political rift amongst tribal communities and people across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra. In addition, The Telangana BJP has threatened to torch down any theatre showing the movie when the film’s protagonist is portrayed as Muslim.

The Telangana High Court has now instructed the filmmakers to bring back the film if it doesn’t harm Alluri Sita Ramaraju and Komaram Bheem’s image. The filmmakers have yet take action on the court’s decision – it will be interesting to hear their response.
